The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is a multilateral development bank with a mission to improve social and economic outcomes in Asia. Headquartered in Beijing, it began operations in January 2016 and has now grown to 100 approved members worldwide. By investing in sustainable infrastructure and other productive sectors in Asia and beyond, it will better connect people, services and markets that over time will impact the lives of billions and build a better future. The Republic of Kazakhstan ratified the AIIB Articles of Agreement on 24 June 2015. Since then, the AIIB has invested in various projects in Kazakhstan, often related to infrastructure, such as CAREC.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The Karaganda - Balkhash highway section is the portion of the national highway en route border of Russia (Yekaterinburg) - Almaty, running through Karaganda, Astana, Kostanay and one of the portions of the Center-South corridor of the Astana-Karaganda-Balkhash-Kapshagay-Almaty highway. The total length of this section is 363 km. The project aims to improve the country’s infrastructure.
