In 2015 an implementation agreement was signed for a project to construct the Kerbulak hydroelectric station on the Ili River with a capacity of 33 megawatts. The project is worth $151.6 million. The new HPP will increase the capacity of the Kapchagai HPP from the current 250 MW to 360 MW and balance peak loads of the southern zone of Kazakhstan.[1]
An additional 245 million kilowatt-hours will be generated annually upon completion of construction. Also, the construction of this station on a transboundary river is a matter of rational water use and will make it possible to preserve an additional 55 million cubic meters of water in the winter for use during the growing season.[2]
