Since 1996, the World Bank has conducted over 100 projects in Tajikistan. These projects range from being being focused on infrastructure, education, poverty alleviation and energy and more. 

Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is a multilateral development bank with a mission to improve social and economic outcomes in Asia. Headquartered in Beijing, it began operations in January 2016 and have now grown to 93 approved members worldwide. By investing in sustainable infrastructure and other productive sectors in Asia and beyond, they will better connect people, services and markets that over time will impact the lives of billions and build a better future. This project was the first project of Tajikistan that the AIIB was involved in, but it was among the first projects that the AIIB conducted after its founding.

The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) is an international financial institution established to promote economic growth in its member states, extend trade and economic ties among them, and support integration in Eurasia through investment. The Bank was conceived by the Presidents of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan and established in 2006, following the signing of an international agreement by the Presidents of those two countries on 12 January of that year. The Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Tajikistan became full members of the Bank in 2009, the Republic of Belarus in 2010, and the Kyrgyz Republic in 2011. Its main objectives are searching for and financing integration projects; and enhancing cooperation with the governments of its member states, international financial institutions, national development institutions and commercial banks in searching for and discussing new projects. Since Tajikistan’s accession, the EDB has provided loans and investments to the country. 

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The objectives of the First Phase of Nurek Hydropower Rehabilitation Project for Tajikistan are to rehabilitate and restore the generating capacity of three power generating units of Nurek hydropower plant, improve their efficiency, and strengthen the safety of the Nurek dam. There are three components to the project, the first component being rehabilitation of the three generating units, the key infrastructural components of the plant, and replacement of autotransformers. The second component is the enhancement of dam safety. Finally, the third component is the technical assistance.
