DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The construction of a railway line crossing Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan is designed to boost for Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan's trade with China. Though only some 450 to 500 kilometers long, the route is aimed at traveling through the mountains of western China and Kyrgyzstan, sometimes at altitudes of 2,000 to 3,500 meters, and requires the construction of nearly 50 tunnels and more than 90 bridges. The line would start in Kashgar, in China's western Xinjiang Autonomous Uyghur Region, and run through Kyrgyzstan to Uzbekistan's eastern town of Pap, in Uzbekistan's section of the Ferghana Valley. By this project, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, construction will guarantee the further development of transport infrastructure, as well as provide access to the ports of the Persian Gulf and the Pacific. The railway will contribute to the development of the Osh province in the south of Kyrgyzstan, and new jobs will be created. The region can export meat, milk, honey and drinking water to China.
